My work juxtaposes elements of the physical body with those of our natural surroundings. As a student at The Rhode Island School of Design, I was drawn to the nature lab, and spent time studying and sketching the array of animal and plant life. I was inspired by evolution; the simultaneous uniformity and diversity of structure linking all life forms.
I am drawn to locations where indigenous man has carved a mark. As a New Yorker living in Seattle, I gather inspiration from a varying array of topographies, from the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest to the desert mesas of New Mexico. I collect native artifacts and study their crafts, drawn from the earth and worked by the hand. I forge, solder, sew and saw, merging distinct specimens into new forms and ideas. Each new discovery leads to invention.
